Mbappe And Vinicius Score Penalties As Madrid Gets Help From Woodwork In Win At Sociedad

Mbappé and Vinícius score penalties as Madrid gets help from woodwork in win at Sociedad

Real Madrid survived an early scare to beat Real Sociedad 2-0 in La Liga on Sunday as Karim Benzema missed a penalty but Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior scored from the spot to keep their team top of the standings.

Sociedad, who had won four of their previous five league games, made a bright start and went close to taking the lead in the 10th minute when Brais Méndez’s shot from the edge of the area came back off the post.

Madrid, who had lost only one of their previous 19 games in all competitions, gradually grew into the match and were awarded a penalty in the 27th minute when David Silva was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area.

Benzema, who has scored 21 goals in La Liga this season, stepped up to take the spot-kick but his effort was saved by Álex Remiro.

Madrid continued to press and were rewarded for their persistence in the 57th minute when they were awarded a second penalty after Aihen Muñoz fouled Rodrygo.

This time Mbappé stepped up and made no mistake, sending Remiro the wrong way to give Madrid the lead.

Vinícius made sure of the points in the 76th minute when he converted another penalty after he was brought down by Igor Zubeldia.

The win moved Madrid one point clear of Barcelona at the top of the standings, while Sociedad remained third, four points behind the leaders.
