Sheikh Hasina Remains in Power
Bangladesh's Leader Wins Fourth Term Amid Election Controversies
Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has secured her fourth straight term in a controversial election. Ms. Hasina will serve another five years in office after a landslide victory in the December 30, 2018, polls.
The election was marred by allegations of voter intimidation, suppression, and vote rigging by the ruling Awami League party. The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) claimed the vote was rigged and demanded a new election.
The United States and the European Union have expressed concern over the conduct of the election. The U.S. State Department said "credible allegations of serious irregularities" tarnished the vote.
Despite the controversy, Ms. Hasina has vowed to form a new government and continue her development agenda. She has promised to create more jobs, reduce poverty, and improve infrastructure.
Ms. Hasina, 76, has been the Prime Minister of Bangladesh since 2009. She is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country's first president. Ms. Hasina has been praised for her economic policies, but she has also been criticized for her authoritarian rule.
