Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) announced Sunday that she has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In a statement to her constituents, Lee said that she plans to continue her work in Congress while undergoing treatment.

Lee, 73, is a senior member of the House Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Veterans' Affairs committees. She is also the Democratic Chief Deputy Whip.

Lee said that she is "determined to fight this and come out stronger on the other side." She added that she is "grateful for the support of my family, friends, and constituents."

Pancreatic cancer is a serious disease, but it is also one that can be treated successfully if it is caught early. The American Cancer Society estimates that the five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is 9% if the cancer is caught at an early stage.
