Florida Museum Researches Attacks Worldwide

The International Shark Attack File, established in 1958, is housed at the Florida Museum of Natural History. It is the only scientifically-generated database that tracks shark-human interactions worldwide. The museum recently investigated 120 alleged incidents for its annual report. While the risk of being bitten by a shark is extremely low, Florida tops the global charts for the number of bites, according to the museum.

The museum's report includes all attack types and compiles data from around the world. By using the interactive map, readers can learn more about specific shark species and the locations of attacks. The report also provides information on how to avoid shark attacks and what to do if you are bitten.

Despite the high number of shark bites in Florida, the risk of being attacked is still very low. According to the museum, there were only 120 alleged shark-human interactions worldwide in 2022. Of those, only 4 were fatal. This means that the chances of being bitten by a shark are about 1 in 3.7 million.
