Warner Bros. has acquired the feature film spec script "Black Samurai" from Ghanaian-American filmmaker Blitz Bazawule.
"Black Samurai" tells the extraordinary story of Yasuke, a 16th-century African warrior who rose to become a samurai in the service of the legendary Japanese feudal lord Oda Nobunaga. The script, written by Bazawule, draws from extensive research and historical accounts, bringing Yasuke's remarkable life to the big screen.
Bazawule, known for his critically acclaimed work on the Netflix-produced "The Burial" and the upcoming Disney+ series "The Spiderwick Chronicles," has long been fascinated by Yasuke's story. "I believe that the world is ready for a cinematic exploration of this incredible figure who represents the intersection of cultures and the complexities of identity," Bazawule said.
